As far as date movies go. Probably not your best choice. Nice interpretation of the original. But the story is a bit predictable. Alot of action sequences for the gents, but the ladies will probably consider the romance to be a bit lacking. And while you will probably have alot of post movie discussion, she will likely be happy to be out of the theater and away from the Star Wars geek that she got stuck next to (not you). The only way you could positively sells this is if she happens to be a graphic artist and appreciates the stunning visual effects.

Black Swan

OS I am torn on this as a date movie. It is in it's own right a good movie and its about a professional ballet dancer. There are also some intense and racy erotic scenes that (let's face it) the gentlemen will appreciate. But there are also a few graphic gore style scenes that are not for the squeamish. It's tough to say more without giving a lot away, but lets just say she has a scratching disorder and it gets quite graphic at times. Post wrap up date discussion is there, but this movie is more on the thought provoking and graphic side of things so she won't be feeling the warm and fuzzies at the end of it. This also means neither will you at the end of the date.

OK choice for a first date flick. Again as long as she is cool with the animated thing. However the love story is great so that should quickly reel her in. Especially since there is the whole girl power theme embedded in it as well. Not much for the guys though, the humor is decent and some action sequences. But the story is predictable and sometimes Disney saccharine sweet. The main antagonist was extremely well done and written, you might find some interesting post date wrap up here.

For an animated film surprising well done for adults. The romance is predictable but still the story is carried out in an original way. Some romantic interest for the ladies an evil mad genius for the guys, its a great match. Your date may be slightly reluctant to see it since it is a "cartoon" but hopefully this will win her over. And if she is such a stick in the mud to not even try it if your buying, then why continue the date anyway? There should be some lighthearted and friendly post date discussion.

Overall and excellent movie. I highly recommend this as a good first date film. It's timely, interesting, full of action sequences, and thought provoking. The only place it falls down is the lack of on screen romance. But you do have a wayward father trying to get back to his orphaned young children, so yeah the chicks will dig that and likely forget there isn't much of a love story. There will be plenty of post date discussion about the movie and it's relatively safe, so long as you don't cling to your position too tightly. Or you could also stick to your guns and perhaps impress your date with your keen insight.

This is pretty much you get what you see and even less so. Sure it has a super villain adopting 3 adorable little girls. So it sounds like it would be perfect match for the guy and girl movie date. Lots of animated films at least have some moderate adult humor to keep the parents interested. This is pretty much all aimed at the kids. Skip this one completely as there were be absolutely no post date wrap up and your date will probably think you never left the womb.

Not a bad overall flick. Some funny points and some interesting relationship humor. Plenty of action. But the age gap between Bruce Willis and the main romantic interest seems a little large. Also it's more of a "that's" how we did it back in the day kinda of movie. Basically your dad will love it. SO as a date flick, it's passable but there won't be much post date wrap up.

The Expendables

Very typical action film which is light on plot but heavy on explosions. This is not a wise choice for an early date. Guys will likely enjoy some of the over the top action sequences, but some scenes border on the ludicrous and any CGI components are poorly done. It looks like they had their college intern mock them up after his hazing party the night before.
As for the ladies, the romance is on life support and none of the man candy is really exposed. Honestly I can't think of any reason why someone missing the Y chromosome would want to watch this. If some how you convince your date to go, don't be surprised if you find her waiting in the car with the engine running and the car in drive by the start of the credits.
Any post movie discussion? No not really. The only thing that might be worth discussion is the one liner around Arnold's cameo. But that conversation will last 15 seconds, assuming your date hasn't driven off by then.
Bottom line, take your date to something else.... anything else. Unless of course she requests to see it, in that case you should propose on the spot.

The Other Guys
C-
Unless your date is a Will Farrell fan, catch this one with a group or a friends.
The movie overall was pretty entertaining and very amusing. However as a date flick it's pretty light. Alot of comedy but no romance or man candy to suck the ladies in. Guys will like the humor and the over the top action sequences but the ladies will likely lose interest. Also not much in the way of post movie wrap up other then repeating a few good one liners. Unless your date is a Will Farrell fan, catch this one with a group or a friends.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World
A- (For geeks and punks)
D (For hipsters and mainstream)
Overall good date flick or geeks and punks, bad date flick for Hipsters and mainstream.
This one was a tough one to rate. It's about a geeky bass guitarist chasing after his dream girl., however in order to date her he must defeat her 7 evil exes. The plot and action sequences closely resemble a video game more then real life. So things can feel a little trippy at times. But, it's really well done for what it is and the comedic timing is excellent. The "Is Scott Here?" "No" scene alone is worth watching the movie for. The sound track also gets high marks with great artists contributing.
If you are bringing a girl who could be wearing a T-Shirt "I 8> Geeks" or actually knows who The Clash is then this is a perfect choice. But if the lady is into Burberry handbags or fist pumping then avoid this at all costs.
For guys the action sequences, while ridiculous, are pretty fun to watch and there are enough of them to get you through to the end.
The post movie wrap up will be lengthy for geeks and punks, but will be limited to "What the Hell was that?" by Hipsters and mainstream. Overall good date flick or geeks and punks, bad date click for Hipsters and mainstream.

Welcome!
I was posting some movie reviews on my Face Book page and I decided this would be a better forum. I review movies mostly in the context of whether or not they would be a good flick to take your date to. A movie that has a little romance for the ladies and maybe some big shiny explosions for the fellas. I may add more to the specifics of my criteria later, but for now you get the idea.
